In television broadcasting, breaking news is a special report in the form of an alert crawl or a brief break in regular programming to provide immediate information about events that are occurring and that are of major importance. Breaking news reports are often accompanied by dramatic music cues, as well as lower third graphics, to convey the sense of urgency that the event warrants. Breaking news is most common on 24-hour news channels that have an anchor available for live interruption, but it can also occur during non-news programming on other networks. Previously, breaking news would only elicit an interrupt for extremely urgent and important events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted many stations to suspend their regular programs and air a special report.
