Breaking news is an urgent topical or current affairs story that is deemed so important by a television or radio station that it requires an interruption of normal programming. This usually involves a countdown sequence from a network, telling its affiliates to stand by and then the broadcast of a breaking news report, normally overlaid with the station’s logo. Before the existence of 24-hour news networks, break-ins were rare and mainly reserved for major events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and severe weather such as tornado warnings or hurricanes, which required local stations to interrupt their regular programming with alert crawls and cut-ins.
