Breaking news is a television or radio report about an urgent news event that interrupts non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, their regular scheduled ones). It usually begins with a countdown sequence on the network feed to allow any affiliate station to switch to its breaking news feed, then introduces the story through an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. Prior to the introduction of 24-hour news channels, stations would interrupt programming only for severe weather events or extremely urgent stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
