Trending is a breaking news story, a news item of urgent importance that requires immediate coverage. This is the type of news that a broadcaster interrupts regular non-news programming, or sometimes its own regularly scheduled network feed and inserts a “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were generally reserved for extremely important events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Often, these events would be accompanied by lower thirds announcing the break in regular programming, alerting viewers to the severity of the situation. A countdown sequence may also be used to allow time for network affiliates to switch to the breaking news feed.
