Breaking news is an event of national or international significance that warrants immediate reporting, requiring the interrupting of other programming on network television and radio. Often, the breaking news is accompanied by a newsflash or “special report” graphic with distinctive music cues, which are used to alert viewers that regular programming will soon be interrupted.
Until the rise of 24-hour television, programming interruptions were generally restricted to extreme events that required widespread coverage, such as the assassination of President John F.
