Trending is a segment of a television or radio broadcast which focuses on breaking news stories. Typically, the event will prompt a national network to interrupt non-news programming, and a countdown sequence will be displayed as the network prepares to feed affiliate stations the live news feed. A ticker graphic may also appear in the corner of the screen, and lower thirds might be modified to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking news often prompts a program interruption for extended periods of time, and sometimes can last several hours or even days, depending on the subject matter. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, interruptions for breaking news were typically reserved for major events that commanded nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their own programming to cover the story.
