Breaking news is a short segment of current non-news programming that interrupts a regular television or radio program to cover an important or urgent story. It is sometimes referred to as Newsflash, or more specifically Special Report or Breaking News (disambiguation). In the days before 24-hour news networks existed, such breaks were usually reserved for extremely serious news events that required numerous stations to suspend their normal programming, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. The break usually begins with a countdown, with a distinctive music cue, and a graphic showing the story at hand.
