Breaking news is a type of television news story that requires the national network news broadcast to interrupt current non-news programming (or, in some cases, regular, scheduled breaking news updates). This type of report is usually accompanied by a countdown sequence and the distinctive music cue of the network feed opening. The newscast may then pause for a moment to allow affiliate stations to join the network feed before continuing. During this time, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, national network news broadcasts typically only interrupted regular programming for very urgent stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. However, since the early 1990s, many television and radio stations have incorporated live weather coverage during breaking news events such as landfalling hurricanes and tornadoes, reducing the need for cut-ins.
