Breaking news is live coverage of a developing story, usually in the form of a ticker or an alert crawl. It is typically interrupted from regular programming, and may be combined with special graphics and an announcement by a news anchor to convey urgency. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news networks, these breaks were typically reserved for extremely urgent stories requiring nationwide coverage (such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy), requiring numerous stations to interrupt their programming simultaneously. The news broadcast might then continue for hours or days, and the network will integrate analysis of the event through analysts in-studio, or via phone, satellite, or broadband (B-GAN). Newsflash and Special report are also terms used in similar contexts.
