When a story breaks that is so important that it requires an interruption in regular programming, either on a national network newscast or on local television stations. This is often referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report.” Before 24-hour news networks, stations would interrupt programming for breaking stories only in situations of extreme urgency, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and for severe weather events that were in progress and required immediate coverage. A countdown graphic and music cue may be used to indicate that the newscast will be interrupted, or network affiliates will use their own lower third graphics to identify the story they are covering.
