When you want to know the latest news about the world, it’s usually best to watch the news broadcast on TV. But with the advent of streaming news, there is a new way to get the information you need.
Streaming television looks just like conventional television, but it arrives on your demand. In addition to breaking news, major networks offer documentaries, news analysis, and reruns. They also schedule regular nightly news programs.
Streaming has proven to be attractive to a wide range of audiences. For example, one study found that viewers spend more time watching streaming programming than they do broadcast TV. Another finds that a majority of Americans prefer to use online video streaming to get their news.
These trends are convergent. The influx of media choices has encouraged voters to get even more involved in political silos. As a result, they avoid news that challenges their beliefs. This creates a fertile environment for innovators.
Historically, the broadcast news business has been profitable. Several networks, including CNN and MSNBC, have been successful in attracting a partisan audience. However, these networks are facing competition from free news streamers.
Free news streamers are trying to convince consumers that they can cut the cable subscription, and they are promising cable-quality news. By promoting free, commercial-averse news, these new streams hope to earn a piece of the $3 billion in profit they make each year.
One example of free news streamers is Readly, a digital magazine app. Six hundred digital newspapers are available on the service.
