When breaking news occurs, a national broadcast network will interrupt non-news programming (or, in some cases, even a regular newscast) to cover the event. The network feed will usually pause, then a graphic and distinctive music cue are played to alert viewers that the breaking news is coming up. If the event warrants a lengthy and detailed report, lower thirds and other graphics will be altered to indicate that special reports are underway. During such reports, the news anchor will often be introduced and will introduce his or her team of reporters, sometimes via video-link. In the days before 24-hour news networks, such breaks were normally reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or severe weather threats, which can prompt a plethora of local station cut-ins.
