In the days before 24-hour news networks, network affiliates would interrupt regular programming for breaking news events that prompted widespread coverage. These were usually a result of severe weather, such as a tornado or landfalling hurricane, but could be any story that required immediate nationwide attention. Often, a special graphic or countdown sequence was used, and the national news anchors paused their regular newscasts.
