Breaking news is a broadcast television, radio or online news story that is developing so quickly that it warrants immediate, ongoing coverage. Such events typically require an interruption of regular, non-news programming on the affected station, though this practice was less common until the emergence of 24-hour news networks. When such an event occurs, the network will usually issue a special alert and then begin broadcasting a live breaking news report. Depending on the severity of the event, the newscast will often be interrupted at regular intervals to provide updates and analysis on the developing story. The network will also generally notify its affiliates to stand by and to expect an immediate cut-in to the breaking news story at hand. Occasionally, lower thirds and other graphics will be altered to convey a sense of urgency to viewers as well.
A look at some of the stories that are making headlines this week. Hallie Jackson travels to New Mexico to discuss the latest developments in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation and why his Zorro Ranch wasn’t searched sooner. And Ronda Rousey’s boyfriend talks about his role in reviving St. John’s basketball.
