Current News is the name for a segment of a newscast or other broadcast that features coverage of breaking stories. The segments typically begin with a news anchor or other reporter announcing that an event has occurred that warrants an interruption of non-news programming, or, in the case of a national network newscast, a countdown to allow affiliate stations to join the feed. The news report may last only a few minutes, or it could continue for hours and even days. When the break ends, station imaging promotions and program reminders return to normal. In recent years, 24-hour news networks have begun to use “Newsflash” or “Special Report” tickers during regular programming, eliminating the need for break-ins.
