When a story breaks that warrants an immediate interruption of regular programming, television and radio stations interrupt normal broadcasting to provide live coverage of the event through cut-ins (or alert crawls during ongoing regular programs). This kind of breaking news usually requires network affiliates to “stand by” for the network feed to be interrupted, at which time the network will begin to count down a few minutes before the upcoming news story is expected to start. The network will often feature a special graphic and distinctive music cue to signal the upcoming interruption.
