Breaking News is an emergency broadcast event requiring the interruption of regular non-news programming or, in the case of network television, an interrupt of a regularly scheduled newscast (known as “special report” or “newsflash”). Prior to the advent of 24-hour cable and satellite news channels, these events were typically limited to very serious news, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required national networks to halt normal programming and interrupt other stations across the country. In more recent times, networks have opted for a special ticker for certain breaking news events during their regularly scheduled programs, lessening the need for such cuts.
