When a breaking news event occurs that warrants the interruption of non-news programs or even regular network newscasts, it is often announced through a special graphic and distinctive music cue. The graphic may say “Newsflash” or “Special report,” and the national network feed will usually pause for an interval to allow affiliates to switch over to the network feed. During the break, stations may also alter their lower thirds and graphics to add to the urgency of the situation.
