Breaking news is a term used by television and radio broadcasters to refer to events that require an immediate interruption of current non-news programming (or, in some cases, regular daily or weekly network or local newscasts) to report on them. In the past, such breaks were usually reserved for extremely urgent events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, or severe weather. When breaking news reports occur, stations often interrupt their own regular commercial advertising to present them, and they may change their lower thirds or other graphics to convey a sense of urgency.
