It may be followed by a regular newscast or, if the event warrants it, national and local station newscasts may be interrupted for live coverage. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were typically reserved for extremely urgent news events that required widespread coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
