Breaking News is a special segment of a news broadcast, usually in which a breaking story is covered. Often, the segment will involve an event that requires the station to interrupt regularly scheduled programming, such as a severe weather threat or terrorist attack. The network will typically alert its affiliates to the breaking news, asking them to interrupt their regular programming for the report. Depending on the event, an opening graphic and distinctive music cue may be used, along with a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch to the network feed. Until the rise of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were restricted to extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required nationwide coverage that interrupted numerous stations’ regular programming.
