Trending is a current news segment on television or radio shows that highlights and discusses the top stories in the world. It may also be referred to as Trending Now or Breaking News. This type of segment usually begins with a network feed interruption (sometimes with an introductory countdown sequence to allow affiliates to join the feed) that is then followed by a special newsflash or “Special Report” ticker. Depending on the story, it can run for a few minutes or even hours or days. Before 24-hour news networks were common, such interruptions were typically reserved for national events that required nationwide coverage such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
