Breaking news is an urgent report about a developing story that requires immediate attention. Typically, breaking stories interrupt other non-news programming and occasionally regular newscasts, especially those of national networks with nationally based affiliates. This often starts with a countdown sequence, or a special “Newsflash” graphic, overlaid on the top of the screen, that alerts the viewer to the impending interruption. Depending on the severity of the story, stations may also use special tickers or lower thirds during regularly scheduled programming to convey that a significant breaking news event is occurring. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of breaking news reporting was rare and usually limited to very important events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
