About Current News
Breaking news is a term used to describe urgent or breaking news events that necessitate a cut-in to interrupt non-news programming, or in the case of a national network broadcast, to pause the ongoing program and switch to a special report. Depending on the event, this may last for only a few minutes or can go on for hours, days, and even weeks in some cases. Before 24-hour news networks came along, such interruptions were usually reserved for highly important or sensitive events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. A similar interruption was often used for severe weather events, where lower thirds or alert crawls would be interrupted during normal programs.
