When a story develops that is so urgent that it requires an immediate interruption in current non-news programming, or in the case of national network newscasts, in regular live feeds from satellite or broadband, then the network will interrupt programming with a special “breaking news” graphic, usually with a distinctive music cue. Often the networks will alert their affiliates that the break is coming, or ask them to stand by as they prepare to switch over to a special feed. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were usually reserved for significant events, like the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which necessitated nationwide coverage that required numerous stations to interrupt regular programming to provide breaking news.
