Breaking news is an event or development that warrants the immediate interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, a live pause in an ongoing story) to provide information about it. It is also known as a Newsflash or Special Report (see below). In recent years, many major networks have employed “Breaking News” tickers in place of cut-ins during regularly scheduled programming, limiting their use to only the most serious events.
