Breaking news is an urgent, often time-critical story that elicits nationwide coverage and thereby requires numerous broadcast stations to interrupt regularly scheduled programming to air live reports. The breaking news is often accompanied by a distinct graphic and a special music cue, known as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. The breaking news may require just a few minutes of interruption or it may last for several hours or even days. In the days before 24-hour news networks, this type of break was rare and usually restricted to extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. In the case of network newscasts, a countdown sequence is often used to notify affiliates to standby and switch to the national feed.
