Breaking news is a term used by broadcasting networks when an event happens that requires them to interrupt regular programming, or, in the case of network newscasts, their affiliates’ scheduled local newscasts. The breaking news story is often accompanied by a special graphic overlay, a countdown sequence, and a music cue to indicate the change in program content. The report may last a few minutes, or, in the case of a major event such as an assassination, could continue for hours or even days. Until 24-hour news channels became commonplace, these interruptions were only used for extremely urgent news events such as weather or severe natural disasters.
