When a story breaks that is so urgent that it requires immediate coverage, broadcasters interrupt regular programming and interrupt a live newscast (or, in some cases, a pre-recorded one) to begin a “breaking news” report. Typically, the network will alert its affiliate stations with a countdown sequence and ask them to stand by for the break. The network will usually open the breaking news report with a graphic and a distinctive music cue, referred to as a newsflash or special report. This type of break is commonly used for severe weather events and national emergency announcements.
