Breaking news is a television or radio broadcast event that warrants the interruption of non-news programming. This can be for a very short time, or for extended coverage of an event. A breaking news story will often begin with a graphic that says “Newsflash” or “Special report”, and usually contains a distinct music cue. A countdown is displayed, to give network affiliates time to switch over to the feed. This format was once common in the days before 24-hour news networks, and was used for major events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which elicited widespread national coverage, requiring numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming for breaking news coverage.
