About Trending

Breaking news is a news story that is of sufficient urgency that it requires an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, or in some cases, a network newscast. This is most often used to cover severe weather events such as tornado warnings, but it can also be used for other breaking stories. The breaking news segment normally opens with a countdown sequence, as well as an alert crawl that appears over the station’s logo. Depending on the story, lower thirds and other graphics may also be overlaid with a distinctive, urgent look. In the past, such breaks were reserved for stories of extreme importance, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or to cover a nationwide event such as the Oklahoma City bombing.
