Trending is a current news segment on television or radio. It is often used in conjunction with breaking news events that elicit national or international coverage, and require the station to interrupt regularly scheduled programming for a period of time. Normally, the broadcast network will announce to all of its affiliates that they will be interrupting programming with a special report. The break is usually announced with a distinctive opening graphic, and a countdown sequence to allow the stations to switch over to the national feed. The graphic and music are sometimes altered to convey a sense of urgency. Other terms for this type of news event include newsflash and special report.
