When breaking news occurs, a television network may interrupt its non-news programming to cover the story. The interruption, often called a newsflash or special report, may be as short as a few seconds or last for multiple hours or even days. The network will typically alert its affiliates, asking them to stand by for the upcoming break and letting them know when they can switch over to the feed. The break is usually announced through a distinctive news opening graphic and music cue, and lower thirds and other graphics are altered to convey the urgency of the situation. Alternatively, the network may simply break into its live newscast.
