NYC area braces for possible rail strike

The Long Island Rail Road and unions representing about 3,500 workers are trying to avoid the first strike in more than 30 years as a midnight deadline approaches.

Breaking News is a term used for an urgent news story that requires a program or network to interrupt regular non-news programming (or, in the case of a 24-hour news channel, an ongoing live report). Typically, this interruption occurs with a countdown and special graphics to alert viewers of the breaking event. It is often followed by a news anchor who takes over from the original programming and introduces the news. In the past, this type of programming interruption was reserved for highly significant events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but it is now a common feature of the 24-hour news cycle.
