Trending is a daily segment on CNN that talks about the stories making the biggest buzz in and around the world. From breaking news to politics, pop culture and beyond, it’s the best of what we’re hearing about right now.
Breaking news is a national news event that elicits nationwide coverage and requires many stations to interrupt their non-news programming to cover the story. The break usually begins with a network announcement telling affiliates to stand by as they switch to a special report. The reporting may continue for minutes, hours or even days, and may feature an anchor live from the scene. Oftentimes, the story is followed by ongoing analysis and discussion with reporters in studio or field locations. Prior to the creation of 24-hour news channels, breaking events were reported by means of “newsflash” or “special report” tickers that appeared during regularly scheduled broadcasts and interrupted non-news programming.
