Breaking News
In television, breaking news is a news story that is so important or time-sensitive that it requires an immediate interruption of current non-news programming, often with a special graphic and distinctive music cue, followed by the broadcast of a live, on-scene reporter covering the event. Traditionally, breaks were reserved for events of major importance that would require widespread coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a large natural disaster, but they have since become commonplace at 24-hour news networks with anchors ready to interrupt regularly scheduled programming with breaking stories at any moment.
Occasionally, a network may use lower thirds and other graphics to alert viewers of breaking news events during regular programming, lessening the need for a cut-in. This is also known as a Newsflash or a Special Report.
