A breaking news story is a television or radio broadcast event that warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming. It is also known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report.” When an event occurs that is so important that it warrants an immediate interruption of regular programming, the network will usually notify all affiliated stations and ask them to stand by. Depending on the severity of the event, network affiliates may be asked to interrupt their local newscasts or switch over to the national feed. Once the break has ended, the station can then resume its regular programing. Breaking news often involves serious and sometimes life-threatening events such as severe weather, terrorist attacks, or war. However, even mundane events such as a plane crash or an explosion can be considered breaking news if they have the potential to affect large areas of the country or world.
