Breaking news is live television coverage of current events that demands immediate attention. A breaking news event can warrant an interruption in non-news programming, or a network will pause its regular newscast and announce that it will begin live, on-site reporting from the scene of the story. The network will usually alert its affiliates to stand by while the break is occurring, and may use a special graphic and music cue that distinguishes it from the rest of its coverage.

Before 24-hour news networks were widespread, breaking news coverage was often limited to extremely urgent news events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, for which a newsflash or special report would interrupt regular programming to announce. Today, major networks often utilize “Special Report” tickers during regularly scheduled programming to cover breaking stories, reducing the need for cut-ins.
