When an event occurs that is considered so important or urgent that it must interrupt current non-news programming or, in the case of a national news network’s live broadcast, pause the broadcast with a countdown sequence to allow affiliates to switch to the network feed and join the report, this is known as breaking news. The news network usually alerts its viewers of the pending interruption by playing a distinctive newsflash-style opening graphic with an appropriate music cue, and then introduces its news anchor to take the viewer into the report.
Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were only used for extremely urgent news events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which required numerous stations to stop their regular programming and provide immediate coverage. Breaking news coverage can last for a few minutes, or can continue for hours or even days, depending on the importance of the story.
