A breaking news event is a news story of such significance that it warrants an interruption of current non-news programs on television, radio or online. The event may require national network affiliates to switch from their regular feeds to a network-supplied newscast, or a local station may interrupt its own programming and broadcast the same special report. This type of interruption is most commonly seen during severe weather events, but can also be triggered by major world or political events. Until the development of 24-hour cable and satellite news channels, programming breaks were typically reserved for extremely urgent or dramatic events.
