State of emergency declared over southern California chemical incident

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) declared a state of emergency in California on Saturday as thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes over a toxic chemical tank that, authorities say, will either leak or explode. NBC News’ Steve Patterson is on the ground just outside the evacuation zone.

The Trending section in the latest issue of Current News talks about Breaking News, which is when an event happens that elicits immediate nationwide coverage and requires a television or radio station to interrupt regular non-news programming. Traditionally, this is only done when the event has serious national significance (such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963). When a breaking news event occurs, the network will alert its affiliates to stand by and will usually use an opening graphic to tell the viewer that a program is about to be interrupted. Alternatively, a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker may be used during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
