Current News, also known as breaking news or special report is a term used for current events that broadcasters feel warrant interruption of scheduled programming in order to report its details. The most common use of the term is for stories that have become newsworthy with little advance warning.

Breaking news may last from a few minutes to multiple hours or even days at a time depending on the nature of the story, and the network and/or station covering it. Often, the breaking news is introduced in a live shot of the anchor or by cutting to video or images of the story. In some cases, the reporter may be at the scene of the event and will share more information with the anchor as it becomes available.

If a national network newscast is in progress at the time of a breaking news report, the network will pause temporarily to allow affiliates to join its feed and provide coverage. A breaking news open graphic (usually accompanied by music such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”) is then rolled, and the network’s voiceover announces that the station is interrupting its program in order to cover the story.

The program may then continue as normal (with the exception of a resuming graphic) or it may start back up at the point of the news interrupt. During this period, the network will remind viewers that more details about the news will be covered in the local or late newscast or on the network’s overnight news program that evening.
