Whether you watch television or listen to the radio, breaking news is something you’ve likely heard. The term is usually associated with a story that’s breaking quickly. The network may choose to air the story or it may have to be re-scheduled. The story may be long enough for the network to incorporate a little analysis.

The term breaking news is usually used to describe an event that’s happening now, but can also refer to something that’s occurred in the past. A breaking news item may include something that’s happened in the past, such as the death of Emily Allen, or it may be a story that’s happening now, such as the launch of a new moon.

Breaking news can be an interruption to regular daytime and late night programming. The network may have a live anchor available, but may also choose to cut away to a video of the event.

The network may choose to announce the breaking news with a brief graphic accompanied by music. It may also include a reverse countdown. The countdown is typically about five seconds.

A similar, but less flamboyant, version of breaking news is the special report. In a special report, the story may be longer than just a few minutes. The story may be passed to a reporter at the site of the breaking event, who may then report the story and possibly share more information.

A special report may include an internal alert service. In the case of the FBI, the agency hopes to speed up the investigation of new crimes.
