When a news event occurs that requires the interruption of current non-news programming, or in the case of a 24-hour network news channel, regularly scheduled newscasts, it is called breaking news. Upon the occurrence of such an event, a national network will alert its affiliate stations by stating to “standby” and then begin to feed them a breaking news report. Depending on the nature of the news, it may require continuous coverage that spans hours or even days. A special top-of-hour graphic, with a distinctive music cue, usually appears during such reports. Newsflash or Special Report are alternative terms for this type of news reporting.
