When news breaks requiring immediate, urgent coverage, it can interrupt current non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour news networks, may trigger a live interruption of a regular television or radio newscast. This type of reporting is often called a “Newsflash” or, for events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, a “Special Report”. A countdown is usually displayed for network affiliates to switch to the breaking news feed. Depending on the story, the broadcast may continue for multiple hours or even days. Lower thirds and other graphics can be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
