Breaking news is a news event or a story that is breaking and warrants immediate coverage. The event may be an ongoing story that a network broadcaster interrupts other non-news programming to follow, or it may be a major story that necessitates a national newscast interruption during regular programming, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, or a severe weather event such as a tornado warning. A breaking news segment is usually marked by a special opening graphic and distinctive music cue. Some networks use special tickers to mark breaking stories in regular programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
