When breaking news occurs, television networks typically interrupt non-news programming (or even regularly scheduled network newscasts) to cover the event. This is known as a newsflash or special report. If the event is especially urgent, or warrants nationwide coverage, a countdown sequence will be displayed to allow affiliate stations to switch to the network feed. A news graphic is then shown, often with a distinctive music cue, and station identification is overlaid. Special reports may also be provided through the use of lower third graphics, which convey a sense of urgency more clearly than cut-ins or alert crawls. This is common in 24-hour news channels, which are prepared for interruption at any moment.
