Breaking news is a television or radio news story that has developed to the point where it warrants an interruption of normal non-news programming (or in the case of network newscasts, a pause in the middle of regularly scheduled news coverage) for live coverage. The event usually triggers a “newsflash” or special report graphic overlaid on the screen, and a countdown sequence to allow affiliate stations to switch to the network feed. The break in programing may last only a few minutes or continue for hours or even days, depending on the nature of the event being covered.
