During prime time, news stations may interrupt their evening newscasts with breaking news. These news reports last from a few minutes to several hours. The breaking news is usually the most important story of the moment.
One of the earliest breaking news stories was the John F. Kennedy assassination, which was covered by CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite. The event took place from November 22 to 26, 1963.
There are several different uses of the “breaking news” term. Aside from being the best news of the day, it may also be used to describe a “special report” that contains a lot of information. This type of story may be more interesting than a news report that is only a few minutes long.
One of the best uses of the “breaking news” term is when a network announces that they are the first to report a story. The network might also incorporate a brief analysis of the news. Often, these “special reports” include an internal alert service.
Some networks, like CNN, are 24-hour news channels. During prime time, they may show a live shot of the anchor during the breaking news. When coverage of the news ends, the network will resume the previous programming.
Some networks have digital subchannels that can provide an alternative channel for programming. These subchannels are often used to provide news reports that may not be aired in prime time. Some networks, like Sky News, emphasize breaking news.
