Trending talks about Current News, which is the term used to describe news that is of an urgent nature and necessitates the interruption of non-news programming, or in some cases, regularly scheduled network television newscasts. The broadcast may start with a countdown sequence, alerting affiliates to the breaking news. A news graphic, typically with a distinctive music cue and lower thirds that convey the urgency of the report is displayed on screen. Depending on the event being covered, the breaking news coverage may last for only a few minutes, or continue for days or longer. In the past, such news events were called “Newsflash” or “Special report”; before 24-hour news networks, these breaks were generally reserved for major, nationwide news events that demanded the highest level of priority.
